Part of the Corkscrew/Ug Land themeing.

One corkscrew's trains enters the brake run.

In 1980 the owner of Alton Towers decided that he wanted to make his castle more than just a historic building with a gift shop. Along came corkscrew. This was the first ride at Alton Towers if it wasn't for this then Alton Towers would never have become a theme park.

This part of the park used to be Festival Park but in 1999 it become Ugland and Corkscrew got an overhaul. It was repainted and got new trains to fit with the theme. Early photographs show Stegosaurus spikes on top of the corkscrews but I've never seen them.

If you look at the top part f the ride you can see that because it is above tree height and because of the height restrictions it has been painted green.

21 years old this year Corkscrew is beginning to show it's age. It has become a very bumpy ride and there is no padding in the seats.

Tip: Don't rest your head on the back of the seat or you'll come off in pain, and bring some headache tablets.
